The AIDS victims themselves told these intriguing stories when they decided to go public. Their message communicates two very important secrets of living positively with AIDS, namely, the power of faith in God, through Jesus Christ and the benefit that an AIDS patient gets from belonging to a post HIV/AIDS-test club or organization.
The stories are brought to the world to give people a glance at Uganda as the center of battle against AIDS as it raged at the emergence of the disease in Africa. The openness of the country about the disease right from the beginning must be seen as the environment which partly encouraged the authors to go public.
"My first posting with World Vision was in Rakai District -- the first place in Uganda to be hit by AIDS. I saw for myself how the disease ravaged the people there for lack of knowledge of what it is, and for lack of openness about their suffering. I also witnessed how hopeless an HIV&AIDS affected community can get. From observation, I must say there is immeasurable power in accessing counseling services, in group therapy, and above all in finding hope and strength in God through Jesus Christ. I salute AIDS patients who go public like the authors of the stories in this book did, because this presents opportunities for useful linkages that help with HIV&AIDS management, and enhances positive living. The beauty of these stories is admirable." --Agatha Kisakye Kabugo, Child Protection and Advocacy Coordinator, World Vision Uganda.

The editor of this book, Rev. James Emmanuel Mutumba, holds a Communication Degree from Messiah College, Grantham, USA, and a Master of Divinity from Uganda Christian University. He is engaged in research, writing and counseling. He edited the stories to highlight the circumstances under which the authors contracted AIDS, how they discovered they had it, and what helped each of them to accept their unfortunate situations and to put up with the extraordinary physical and social new challenges. The book has two aims One, to encourage other AIDS patients to fight the disease without giving in to stigma, self rejection or resignation; and two, to expose AIDS’ ugly ‘face’ in order to facilitate comprehensive awareness among people who are not infected.
Smiling in the Storm 20 Moving Stories of AIDS Patients who Defied the Disease eBook James E Mutumba
“The more difficulties one has to encounter, within and without, the more significant and the higher in inspiration his life will be.” ~Horace BushnellSmiling in the Storm is a compilation of short stories from people in Uganda that have succumb to the disease perhaps in body but not in spirit. The work is compiled and edited by James E. Mutumba and many also have been translated by him as well.
One thing I found is little is lost in translation (as is sometimes the case when reading a work from a different culture) and found that Mr. Mutumba did a successful job of easing this transition for the reader.
The messages throughout the book are clear. To defy the loss of will and to have good faith: “…but suffice it to say that a self-controlled life, especially a spiritually regenerate life is the most potent protection against AIDS.”
This Christian inspirational work is (as it’s aimed to be) a wonderful tool for spreading awareness and surely hope that it encourages others to become more aware of the situation worldwide.
